Alumni Spotlight: Kamira Sloan, The Power of Being Present
Share

Kamira Sloan is a proud member of the Summer Search Philadelphia 2013 cohort. Kamira’s first Summer Search trip took her on an expedition with Outward Bound on the Appalachian Mountain Trail, where she spent 12 days living in the forest. It was physically and mentally challenging—but also a chance to discover what she was capable of.

“I got to learn a little bit more about how strong I am as a person, mentally and physically. And I got to meet all these new people and it was so fun.”
Her second trip brought her to Penn State for an academic experience focused on creative arts, including dance and art classes. Being away from home gave Kamira a taste of independence and the program encouraged her to reflect on her experiences and become more comfortable connecting with others.
Those lessons were reinforced by her Summer Search mentor, Lauren, who Kamira remembers as open, transparent, and intentional about checking in on how she was feeling.

The relationships Kamira built through Summer Search have lasted well beyond her time in the program. She still looks forward to opportunities for her cohort to come together and treasures the lifelong friendships she made. When Kamira looks back, the impact of Summer Search is profound:
“It just taught me how to be a better person…It taught me how to not be afraid of my own circumstances and that I should see beyond what I’m going through.”
Just as importantly, Kamira learned that asking for support is a strength.
“It is okay to be emotional. It’s okay to not be okay. It is okay to feel. It is okay to have help. It’s okay to ask for it.”
Today, Kamira works as a Family Peer Specialist for the School District of Philadelphia. She also makes time for creative pursuits, including creative writing. Looking ahead, Kamira hopes to make a lasting difference in the lives of others—especially by showing people what’s possible by telling her own story.
She also hopes today’s young people feel empowered to seek the mental and emotional support they need. Her advice for a new Summer Searcher? Come ready to participate.
“The program is what you make it be. Be receptive. Be open. Be open-minded…Be present.”

The Summer Search journey doesn’t end with a milestone—it continues to evolve through the lives and leadership of our Alumni. We’re excited to continue our new Alumni Spotlight Series to answer the question, “Who are Summer Search Alumni?”. This series will feature conversations with Alumni across our community who share their experiences with Summer Search, how they are building careers, strengthening their communities, and navigating what’s next.
