How Summer Searchers Thrive in Summer Internships

Share

As we approach summer internship recruitment season, we’re proud to spotlight a few incredible Summer Searchers who spent last summer building real-world skills, confidence, and career clarity through paid internships. Do you have an opportunity to host a Summer Searcher at your business or company this summer? Learn more!

Through pre-internship workshops and ongoing one on one support from our Career Team, students gain the tools to step into professional spaces prepared—and stand out once they’re there.

Here’s what that looks like in action:

Current freshman at Tufts University, Gabe U., credits Summer Search with helping him show up as a top candidate for his internship at The Family Van, a mobile healthcare clinic working with underserved, low-income, and minority neighborhoods in Boston. The Summer Search team helped him prepare for the interview, coached him on email communications during the interview process, and served as a partner in accountability. During his summer with The Family Van, Gabe developed hands-on technical healthcare skills:

“Learning how to check clients’ blood pressure and blood sugar allowed me to build confidence in my technical skills. I enjoyed helping people and working in underrepresented communities!”

Hanley M., a senior at University of Massachusetts-Boston also interned with the Family Van. He shared:

Through mentorship and workshops, I learned how to set personal goals, advocate for myself, and stay accountable, which are important skills that helped me do well in a healthcare setting. Summer Search gave me the mindset and preparation to succeed in a real-world professional environment.”

Christina Q. interned at Shawmut Design and ConstructionChristina Q., a current senior at Baruch College, interned with Shawmut Design and Construction in New York. As a construction finance intern, Christina gained insight into how major projects come together behind the scenes. She reports gaining confidence in professional settings, and shared that she formed “meaningful relationships with mentors and peers that I carry with me today.” After completing her internship, Christina was offered a full-time job and is excited to join the Shawmut team after graduation!

Before students begin their internships – typically in early June – they participate in our Internship Intensive in late May.  This program allows Summer Searchers with upcoming internships to build on their skillsets and feel confident and successful. It include topics such as professional presence and expectations, identity in the workplace, goal setting, self-advocacy, networking, and ends with a project to practice and integrate their skills. After 3 years of piloting in Boston, Summer Search aims to bring this program to all sites this year to prepare and mentor students throughout this new professional experience.

Our students are talented, driven, and resilient. They bring diverse perspectives, determination, and a deep desire to learn, alongside the preparation to excel. Through their high school experience with Summer Search, they strengthen skills essential in the workforce including leadership, problem solving, and team building.

Do You Have an Internship Opportunity?

We are currently recruiting paid summer internships for college students in any industry. Our typical partnership process for internships that begin in early June includes:

  • We share your paid internship opportunity with students
  • Students submit resumes directly to your team or through your application portal
  • We support students through mock interviews and other interview preparation

If your organization has internship opportunities our students could apply for, we would love to connect. Please reach out to Christian Moore, Workforce Manager, at cmoore@summersearch.org, to explore partnership opportunities.
