This summer, Summer Search Philadelphia students participated in SOAR, a one-week program filled with creative workshops, field trips throughout Philly, skill building, and moments of reflection. For rising junior Jayelle (she/her), it was more than just a jam-packed week of activities, it was an experience that shifted her perspective.

“SOAR was my summer experience. Everyday we would meet at a given location and go someplace new. Places we visited were Cira Green, Spruce Harbor, Outward Bound, the ICA, and the Parkway Central Library. Throughout the experience, we did yoga, lots of team building activities, games, creative activities, had some deep reflections and conversations, and explored hidden gems in Philadelphia!”

Jayelle expressed that at first she was nervous about getting out of her comfort zone, but soon felt comfortable sharing with the group. While there were plenty of memorable outings, what stood out most for Jayelle was the sense of connection. “My favorite part of the experience by far was simply the time I spent with my group overall. Whether it was actually going places or doing small activities inside, it was always a fun time. For me, the people and environment were the things that structured my memorable and fulfilling week.”

SOAR also offered Jayelle a new way of looking at the world around her. “The scavenger hunt activity we did on one of the days made me aware of how many of the small details in life I don’t quite catch… This made me realize that instead of just simply existing in the world, I should truly live through it and observe the types of things Philadelphia and the world in general has to offer.”

Reflecting on her experience, Jayelle offered advice to future Summer Searchers: “Go into SOAR with a ready and open mind and truly embrace the experience. Don’t just show up, but instead engage with the people, activities, and the small things around you. You’ll learn a nice amount about yourself in such a short span of time.”
