Welcome to another edition of #Snapshot, where we bring you a glimpse of what’s going on at Summer Search.

Nigel at Tufts University
That’s Summer Search Boston alumnus Nigel Robinson at Tufts University, where he will be attending grad school in the fall, pursuing his Master’s Degree in International Affairs.

But before he starts at Tufts, he’ll be spending his summer with a Member of Congress working on international issues as a recipient of the 2018 Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship!

The Rangel Fellowship, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State and managed by Howard University, supports extraordinary individuals who want to pursue a career as a Foreign Service Officer in the State Department. Nigel was one of only 30 fellows selected nationwide for this highly competitive award!

This is an exciting step for Nigel, who has been passionate about service and international issues for a long time. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from Bucknell University in 2014, with a minor in Sociology. As an undergrad, Nigel served as an orientation assistant and leader, was a varsity track and field athlete, and participated in the Bucknell Brigade Nicaragua Alternative Spring Break Trip. He also had the opportunity to serve as a summer teacher intern with the Breakthrough Collaborative and as a summer teaching fellow with Uncommon Schools. After completing his Bachelor’s, Nigel has worked as a student support associate with the Steppingstone Foundation.

He also remains active in his community, as a member of the Summer Search Boston Alumni Board and its current co-chair. Nigel also volunteers with the Posse Foundation Scholar’s Program, of which he is an alum.

Looking ahead, the Rangel Fellowship will provide Nigel with approximately $95,000 in benefits over a two-year period and give him the opportunity to represent his country overseas working in a U.S. Embassy to get hands-on experience with foreign policy and the work of the Foreign Service. After grad school, Nigel will become a U.S. diplomat, embarking on one of the most challenging and rewarding careers of service to his country.

As the Director of the Rangel Program, Patricia Scroggs, put it, “We are thrilled to have Nigel join our program. It was clear then that he had a strong commitment to making a difference in the world through diplomacy. His experience at Bucknell University, as well as his post-graduate experience, have provided an outstanding foundation for his future success. I am confident that he will excel in graduate school and will contribute to global peace and prosperity as a U.S. diplomat.”

Good luck to Nigel, and any Summer Searchers working to change the face of leadership in our communities!
