Summer Search North Bay Alumna Melanie Merkner speaks at an event

Thank You Melanie Rubio Merkner '01 for Giving Back!

In the inaugural year (1999) of Summer Search North San Francisco Bay, Melanie Rubio Merkner entered the program as a referral by Harris Nussbaum at Vintage High in Napa. During her first summer program at Syracuse University, Melanie was able to prove that she was accountable and self-reliant. That summer was a turning point in her life. It gave her time to reflect on her past as well as her future so she could share those aspects of herself with complete strangers---in doing so she made friends she still has not forgotten.

With the help of the college counseling provided by Summer Search, Melanie was able pay her own way through college and also earn her teaching credentials from Sacramento State. When choosing which way her road would lead next, Melanie was driven by her desire to give back to Summer Search and to the school that had brought the opportunity. Today Melanie is teaching Economics and World History at her alma mater, Vintage High, and is volunteering to be the Summer Search Referral Source, replacing the well-loved Harris Nussbaum who is retiring.

Melanie hopes that she will be able to help other students experience the support and the growth she gained through Summer Search. She wants all Summer Searchers to know that although things aren’t always easy, they will get better. We are very excited to have Melanie continue her involvement in Summer Search in this new and generous way. Thank you Melanie!
