Summer Search students frequently stand-out among the rest for their academic performance, commitment to service and exemplary leadership skills. Manuel Heredia Santoyo is one of those students.

Manuel's hardwork and dedication to his education captured the attention writers of the Sonoma Valley Sun who highlighted his success in a recent feature article.

Manuel, a Summer Search student and Class of 2010 graduate from Sonoma High School, was acknowledged for his many accomplishments, including his receipt of a $188,000 scholarship from Colagte University in Central New York, where he will begin classes this Fall. Manuel attributes this acheivement largely to the support of mentors who believed in and encouraged him, including his Summer Search mentor, Ryan Cooney.

In my experience it is rare to find a young man so committed and driven to change his future as Manuel," said Ryan. "Not only is he intent on breaking the stereotypes of Latino males in Sonoma county, he has also played a big role in our efforts to form a strong cohort of first generation college bound students among his younger peers.

Summer Search Senior Honored for Serving Others

Summer Search students are widely known for their altruistic spirit. Whether high school sophomores or alumni, Summer Searchers are united by their commitment to making our world a better place.

When it comes to helping others, Summer Search Senior Ben Nguyen shines.

A humanitarian, philanthropist and high school student, Ben is co-president of Elsie Allen High School’s Interact Club and spends much of his time cleaning creeks, supporting causes and mobilizing his peers to leverage their skills for the public good.

Ben’s leadership in service to his school and community was recently recognized by the Press Democrat when he became one of 10 Sonoma County students to receive the Community Youth Service Award. The winners were selected from competitive pool 141 nominees and each received a $1,000 scholarship.

According to Ben, helping others is a passion he will take with him into his future.

I wish to create a movement to unify this generation of thinkers, workers and world-changers in taking on the challenges of this world and pulling others along with them, while being a medical practitioner,” he said.
